A doubling of storage capacity has been achieved with the installation of a Link 51 shelving system near the Swindon-based Head Office of the Nationwide Building Society. The facility now boasts a total of 16,750 individual storage box locations close to the organisation's headquarters and administration offices. As a key regional location the next nearest similar facility is some distance away in Northampton, the site holds records for a significant geographical area and has been configured both to maximise capacity and to permit simple, accurate access to stored material. The entire Link 51 installation features the company's versatile and robust Euro-shelving system. Significantly, the design takes full advantage of the height of the building, rising in some areas to no less than 13 shelf levels each spaced according to the dimensions of the standard storage boxes used throughout the facility. The layout also includes areas of lower overall shelving heights to follow the apex roof line and accommodates a centralised heating installation facility and a number of access aisles positioned throughout the premises. Access to each shelf level is achieved via a mobile ride-on platform that can be located at any point within the aisle layout. "We have a legal obligation to hold records in stock for a specified period of time," comments Site Supervisor, Christine Duller. "The need, therefore, for a larger facility was paramount and has reflected both the growth in business and the importance of this centralised facility to a range of our satellite operations in the local area." The Link 51 design has allowed the Nationwide Building Society to make use of what was previously unused space. It now provides the organisation with a facility that can meet the shelf life requirements of each bar-coded container box prior to their eventual review by each customer. | |
